The Gyinyase campus of Kumasi High School (KUHIS), one of the most recognisable second-cycle institution in Ghana became the center of attraction over the weekend as the school climaxed its 60th anniversary celebrations with a grand durbar.
Kumasi High School, one of the leading second-cycle institution and category “A” school in the Ashanti Region, was established in 1962 and absorbed as a public institution in 1964.
With 182 teaching staff and 74 non-teaching staff, the single sex (boys) school currently has a population of 4,007 student.
Kumasi High School, as part of its anniversary celebration, hosted a colorful event that assembled imminent personalities in academia, governance, old students, students, and well-wishers to reflect on six decades of achievements, setbacks and future prospects.
The school has maintained its strength on the national front with recent achievements including being the current Ashanti regional champion of the 2024 Regional National Science and Maths Quiz.
Kumasi High School is the only school to win the enviable trophy in the LuvFM High School debate twice since the inception of the contest.
Headmaster of Kumasi High School, Benjamin Tawiah Twum appreciated the role of the old students and staff in setting the institution among the best in the country.
“The role of the Old Boys cannot be over emphasized. They have really define how institutions polish people for them to now give back to their institution. Because of our indefatigable staff, we are on a sharp spree of academic excellence,” he said.
The 60th-anniversary planning committee unveiled an anniversary project: a 12 million Ghana cedi sports complex that would contain modern tartan tracks, football standard pitch, washrooms and changing rooms and stores.
The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum announced the new development when he addressed Kumasi High School’s 60th anniversary grand durbar, under the theme; “Holistic education in a safe school environment: What next?”
He indicated that in collaboration with the school’s management, a new course will be introduced as part of efforts to produce graduates to fill high-demand areas in the country’s sectors.
“From here, I will engage the management on how we can implement a STEM-related course. Students will soon be able to build robots. The new development will influence innovation and foster a new generation of tech-savvy inventors. The introduction of STEM-allied courses from the next academic year is necessary,” he said.
The Education Minister revealed that funding has been secured from GETFUND to support the project.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Asokwa Constituency, Patricia Appeagyei admonished the school to maintain the standard it has set.
