A political science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast(UCC), Dr. Jonathan Asante-Otchere has urged former President John Agyekum Kufuor to rise above partisanship.
Dr Asante-Otchere argued that Mr. Kufuor’s status as a statesman required neutrality on election matters, hence he must position himself as such.
He made these remarks on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Friday following Kufuor’s several endorsement of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
“At this time of his life, the former President shouldn’t have allowed himself to be used to deceive Ghanaians. Can he tell us he hasn’t heard about the National Cathedral project?
“Rawlings used to criticise his party and then government but Kufuor has never for once done that. Both the NDC and NPP used to speak highly about Kufuor as a way of condemning Akufo-Addo but now he has proven to be truly partisan and so I don’t think any party aside NPP will go to him for advise,” he said.
The former President a few weeks ago faced criticisms over his endorsement of Dr Bawumia, with critics, including Movement for Change flagbearer Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, urging him to abstain from public endorsements.
But the Political Analyst has questioned the relevance of Kufuor’s endorsement or involvement in Bawumia’s campaign on his electoral fortunes.
“Politics is about time and currently, there is a huge voter apathy and it seems the leadership of the party has run out of measures and that was why they brought Kufuor in last minute.
“But to what extent can you involve yourself in the campaign to create an advantage rather than a disadvantaged?” he questioned.
He emphasised that partisan brings division and Kufuor must enjoy his statesmanship, adding, “What do you gain when the NPP wins what do you gains? Nothing. This was why he became a victim to the babies with sharp teeth.”
