Health workers at Krachi East Municipal in the Oti Region are worried over high infant mortality rate in the municipality.
They describe the situation as very worrying and need urgent attention.
Coordinator of Community-Based Health Service (CHPS) Compound in Krachi East Municipal, Solomon Konja told Adom News reporter, Kwame Kulenu that the municipality recorded a total of 60 birth last year but 21 died.
He explained that, the 21 death happened in a particular community called Njare with a population of over 8000 people.
The Coordinator of CHPS Compound attributed the situation to lack of midwife in the community to assist the women in labour.
“Because there is no midwife here, women in labour resort to unskilled delivery which is the one of the causes to high infant mortality rate in the community” Mr Konja said.
The Krachi East Municipal Coordinator of CHPS compound added that, the figure is above out weighs the national figure.
“National infant mortality is 49.3 per 1,0000 lives birth representing 5% whereas that of Njare community is 21 per 60 live births representing 35% so something has to be done to curb the menace” he stressed.
Mr. Konja also revealed how bats have made the CHPs compound a save haven which he said is affecting health delivery.
“The bats has taken over the CHPS Compound and the stench there is very worrying and is this same place that we keep our medicines. Am even afraid patience who come here for health attention could contract other disease due to this” Mr Konja said.
He is therefore appealing to government and corporate Institutions to help them get maternity block and also help them deal with the bat issue.
Meanwhile Municipal Health Direct, Amin Abdul Mutalib says his outfit is aware of the situations and are working to resolve it.
