Konongo residents demand action against illegal mining affecting water bodies

-

Residents of Konongo in the Ashanti Region are demanding action against ongoing mining operations threatening to destroy a crucial water source in the area.

This crisis has ignited widespread outrage among residents.

The mining site, situated along the Kumasi-Accra highway, is contaminating the Owere River, the main water supply for Konongo and neighbouring communities.

Heavy machinery, including excavators, is being used just meters from homes, churches, and businesses, exacerbating the situation.

The Head Pastor of New Life Church of Light speaking to Accra-based Citi News, expressed  deep concern.

He condemned the environmental and social damage inflicted on the community.

Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency and Minerals Commission claim they were only notified of a dredging project by the Asante Akim Central Assembly and were unaware of any mining activities.

Frustrated residents decried the ongoing destruction of water bodies and farmlands due to illegal mining.

The mining area has been shut off, preventing highway travellers from seeing the full extent of the damage.

A section of the highway near the mining site is collapsing and remains unrepaired despite years of pleas.

Residents therefore called for immediate action to stop the mining and restore their vital water source.
