Konkomba chiefs in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region have made a passionate appeal to the government and the Chieftaincy Ministry to recognize and grant them a Traditional Council to facilitate development.
According to the chiefs, the establishment of a Traditional Council would improve communication between them and the government, ensuring that their voices are heard in decision-making processes.
Dawakura Chief (Rtd) W.O.1 Ubor Idam Moboribe made these remarks at the 2024 maiden Yam Festival held at Bonakye-Asuogya in Nkwanta South. He underscored the importance of traditional governance in preserving the cultural heritage and identity of the Konkomba people.
The Yam Festival (Linugil), a significant cultural celebration for the Konkomba people, is not only a time for feasting and festivities but also an opportunity to reflect on the community’s needs and challenges.
He argued that the establishment of a Traditional Council would not only empower leadership but also enhance community development and cohesion.
The chief noted that the Konkomba people have a rich history and a vibrant culture that deserves recognition and support from the government.
He called for increased investment in road infrastructure, education, and healthcare, which he believes are essential for the overall development of the Konkomba communities.
At the event, the Oti Regional Minister, DSP Rtd Daniel Machator, highlighted the need for a structured Traditional Council to address the unique challenges faced by the Konkomba communities.
He pointed out that a Traditional Council would facilitate better communication among traditional leaders.
The Minister expressed his support for the chiefs’ request, highlighting that the traditional council would empower the communities and enhance their ability to address issues effectively.
DSP Rtd Machator, urged the Konkomba communities to maintain peace and continue to support government agenda to ensure the much-needed development.
