Komenda Sugar Factory: Residents notify Police of protest on September 17

-

The Concerned Citizens of the Komenda Traditional Area have notified the Ghana Police Service of their intention to stage a demonstration against the lease of the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian company.

Originally scheduled for August 13, 2024, in Komenda, the protest has been rescheduled to September 17, 2024, and will now take place in Accra.

The demonstrators are demanding the cancellation of the lease agreement, insisting that the factory should return to its initial purpose of processing locally grown sugarcane rather than importing raw sugar.

They contend that the lease agreement was made without proper adherence to procedures and without adequate stakeholder consultation.

In a statement issued on September 3, 2024, the residents formally notified the police in accordance with Section 1, clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).

The group expects a turnout of at least 5,000 concerned Ghanaians from Accra and neighbouring regions. The protest will begin at 6:00 am from the 37 Lorry Station in Accra and will proceed to the Jubilee House.

They have requested police support and security to ensure a peaceful demonstration.
