Komenda residents notify Police of planned demo against Sugar Factory lease

-

The Concerned Citizens of the Komenda Traditional Area have notified the Ghana Police Service about their planned demonstration on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

In a statement dated August 5, the group expects at least 2,000 participants from the Komenda Traditional Area and neighboring regions.

The protest will commence at 6:00 a.m., beginning from Komenda Township and ending at Komenda Junction.

This action complies with Section 1, Clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), which requires notifying the police at least five days before any special event in a public place.

The demonstration is in opposition to the government’s decision to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian firm.

The protesters demand the reversal of the lease agreement, advocating for the factory to return to its original mission of processing locally-grown sugarcane instead of importing raw sugar.

They contend that, the lease agreement did not follow proper procedures or involve adequate stakeholder consultation.
