Kojo Antwi reveals how he became a musician

Music legend, Kojo Antwi says it takes more than just a soothing voice to become a musician.

In an interview granted on Joy FM’s “The Overdrive” show with B’lei on Wednesday, the “Music Man” said it took him about 6 to 7 years to call himself a complete musician.

Narrating his story, the “Medofo pa” hitmaker disclosed that he realized his potential in his teenage years hence he joined a band and started performing other people’s songs.

“You don’t just become a musician. I started as a bands boy, became a bands man before I became an artiste. I was a singer doing covers.  I never thought about writing my own songs. Our repertoire was other people’s music and it was fun. That was the learning process.”

Kojo added that the band helped him a lot but that wasn’t enough to solidify his potential hence he challenged himself the more.

“The band helped me but I wasn’t learning music. I was a second singer so I only observed. We travelled a lot and they spoke about the Elijah Mohammads, the black panthers etc. The learning process wasn’t just about music but the content. You start pouring all these ideas into music later. It took me like 6 to 7 years with the band. We recorded our first album in Togo. Second in Benin,” he said on Joy FM.

Kojo further noted that when he went solo from the band, he started receiving several backlashes but went ahead to solidify his brand and music prowess and that made him the “Kojo Antwi” he is now.

“When I came up with my songs and you heard all these reggae themes in them, I had lots of the older generation asking who is that spoiling our songs,” he said.

Kojo Antwi, also known as Mr Music Man, has promised an unforgettable night for couples at upcoming Joy FM’s lovers’ dinner on February 14, 2019, at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra.
