Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has called for an end to hooliganism in Ghanaian football following the tragic murder of Asante Kotoko supporter, Nana Pooley.
The dedicated fan was fatally stabbed by unidentified individuals during a Matchday 19 clash between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Kronmansah Park in Nsoatre.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Mr. Adams urged football clubs to strengthen their corporate structures to attract sponsorship deals, emphasizing that hooliganism tarnishes the sport’s reputation and discourages potential investors.
“The clubs must improve their corporate structures and increase their visibility to attract sponsors. Without that, I don’t believe corporate sponsors will be interested,” he stated.
He also stressed the urgent need to eradicate violence from Ghanaian football, warning that no brand would want to associate with a league marred by hooliganism.
“The act of hooliganism must stop because no brand would want to associate itself with negativity. We must find ways to make the Premier League more attractive,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has arrested six individuals in connection with the incident, including the owner of Nsoatreman FC, Ignatius Baffour Awuah.
