KNUST Debate Society lifts another trophy in Africa

Boakye Nyamekye Isaac, popularly known as BNI, from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has emerged winner of the 2019 edition of the Zanzibar Debate Open held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BNI paired up with Miss Wairimu Manyara (Nemo) from Strathmore University based in Nairobi, Kenya to win the ultimate prize. Though the two are from different institutions, the rules of Open tournament allows for partnership. The duo won the competition in all preliminary four rounds, semi-finals and the grand finale.

The 2018 Pan African University Debate Champion, ‘BNI’ was crowned the best speaker among over 50 other speakers.

Zanzibar Open is an annual university debating tournament that is organised by the Tanzania Competitive Rhetoric Organisation. It takes place in September each year and is ranked as one of the best Open tourneys across the continent.

The Island Tournament of the Year was held from 12th to 16th September 2019. It takes the British Parliamentary style which is made up of four teams of two, with two teams supporting a motion, and two teams opposing. Debating teams are independent and compete with each other.

The Zanzibar Tournament was built to create anticipation for the 2019 edition of the Pan African University Championship which is dubbed AKOFENA to be held in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology later this year and strengthen the bonds between the institutions representing.
