The Ghana Kidney Association (GKA) has praised the government’s decision to offer free dialysis sessions to kidney patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) but urged that this support be made permanent.
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) recently announced that, effective June 1 to December 2024, patients under 18 and over 60 will receive eight free dialysis sessions per month.
Patients aged 19 to 59 will receive two free dialysis sessions per month.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Ghana Kidney Association expressed appreciation for this initiative but called on the government to extend the support to all patients and make it a permanent feature of the NHIS.
The Association also urged the government to pass the draft legislative framework for organ transplants into law, highlighting it as the most cost-effective kidney replacement therapy.
The GKA appealed for prompt reimbursement for these services, citing previous delays in NHIA payments.
