Kenyan journalist, Kennedy Odiambo has recounted how the protests in Kenya against the controversial finance bill proposing new tax hikes started.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Wednesday, he said it started as a peaceful protest but the youth became violence when the Police fired at them.
Odiambo described as horrifying how the protesters managed to penetrate Parliament.
“The young generation is tired of the taxes,” he said, stressing the growing discontent among the youth.
Mr. Odiambo recounted how the protesters gradually moved closer to the Parliament fence and eventually forced their way in, overwhelming the Police.
“It’s amazing how they were able to penetrate Parliament,” Odiambo remarked.
According to Odiambo, seven people have died so far in the unrest.
He described how people began looting in Parliament and took control of the building noting that, the youth were driven by frustration rather than political motives.
“The youth are tired, and it’s not politically motivated” Odiambo added.
He warned that the situation is far from over, with protesters now aiming to occupy the State House.
The protests, dubbed “7 Days of Rage,” began as peaceful demonstrations against a controversial finance bill proposing new tax hikes.
However, they turned violent on Tuesday when security forces clashed with protesters, leading to the vandalism of state properties and an attack on the Parliament building in Nairobi.
