The management of Accra Academy Senior High School has cited a critical lack of on-campus staff accommodation as a major contributor to rising levels of student indiscipline.
Headmaster Emmanuel Ofoe Fiemawhle disclosed that only 22 staff members currently reside on campus to supervise a student body of approximately 5,000.
He described the shortfall as a significant impediment to maintaining discipline and effective oversight, particularly among boarders.
“We have 22 of our staff who serve as hall masters and other auxiliary workers. So, it is difficult to manage the students as boarders.
If you want to look at the sources of indiscipline, it is because the numbers are not enough to manage the students as boarders,” Mr. Fiemawhle explained during a visit to the school by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education.
He further urged that the issue of residential infrastructure be prioritised.
“I think we should be considering that as part of the priority of the GETFund. For some time now, I haven’t received anything for residential infrastructure,” he added.
Chairman of the Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, acknowledged the staffing gaps witnessed across multiple schools and pledged that steps would be taken to address the situation.
“We have also seen the shortage of staff in the various schools that we went to. In Accra Academy, with a student population of almost 6,000, they lack staff, and they must be provided with the same.
So, we recommend to the Minister of Education to fight for clearance from the Minister of Finance so that they can recruit teachers for senior high schools as well as auxiliary staff,” he stated.
