The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has announced that the upcoming SIM card re-registration exercise, set for June 2025, will be free of long queues.
He assured that the process would be streamlined and digitized, making it faster, more efficient, and more convenient for citizens.
The Minister made this announcement during a visit to Margins ID Group (Intelligent Card Production Systems) in Accra on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
He explained that the new system would allow citizens to re-register their SIM cards online, significantly reducing the need for physical visits to registration centers. The platform is designed to automatically verify user information, cutting down manual processing times.
“This new approach will save people time and reduce the usual frustrations associated with in-person registration. It will also improve the accuracy of citizen data,” Minister Sam Nartey George stated.
The SIM re-registration initiative, which began in 2021, has faced several deadline extensions due to low participation.
The exercise mandates all SIM card users to re-register their numbers using the Ghana Card, the national identity document. Despite efforts to encourage participation, millions of active SIM cards remain unregistered, prompting the government to extend the deadline multiple times.
These delays have sparked public concerns about data privacy and the risk of fraudulent registrations through mobile apps.
However, government officials emphasize that the re-registration policy is crucial for enhancing national security, curbing SIM-related fraud and crime, and improving regulatory oversight through accurate data on valid SIMs.
