Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, has described the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) hard-fought victory as a journey marked by numerous challenges.
Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Tuesday, December 10, Mrs. Mogtari reflected on the struggles leading to the party’s success, highlighting that their path to victory began as far back as 2012.
“That year, John Dramani Mahama had to step in to complete the unexpired term following the sudden passing of President John Atta Mills. Despite significant obstacles, he went on to win the 2012 election,” she recalled.
She further reflected on the challenges faced during that period, saying, “History will record that he was held to ransom for nine months, with the legitimacy of his victory being challenged and undermined from the outset.”
Despite these difficulties, Mahama demonstrated remarkable resilience. “For him to rise above it all, contest the 2020 election, and lead Ghana to its first-ever hung parliament was historic in itself,” she stated.
“To then win the 2024 election with a commanding lead in such a fiercely contested race is unprecedented, at least since the inception of the 1992 Constitution.”
Mrs. Mogtari emphasized that the NDC’s victory was more than just a personal or party triumph — it was a resounding message from Ghanaians. “This 56.7% win is a gift from God,” she remarked. “It signifies that Ghanaians have passed a vote of no confidence in the New Patriotic Party and President Akufo-Addo.”
She added, “It’s as though God intended to reset everything,” signaling a clear rejection of the current administration and a significant shift in the nation’s political landscape.
John Dramani Mahama was re-elected on Saturday, December 7. He secured 6,328,397 votes, defeating the NPP’s Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 4,657,304 votes.
The NDC also achieved a clear majority in parliament, winning over 180 seats out of 276.
