Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has hailed the late Christian Atsu as the best player he has ever played alongside in his career.
Atsu, who was named the Best Player at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), tragically passed away in 2023 after being found under rubble following a devastating earthquake in Turkey, where he was playing professionally.
When asked about the best player he has played with, Ayew had no hesitation in naming Atsu.
“The best player I’ve ever played with, unfortunately, is no longer with us, and that’s Christian [Atsu]. I played with Muntari and Essien,” he told Joy Sports.
“Asamoah [Gyan] and Andre [Ayew] are also up there, but I’ll go with Atsu. He didn’t get enough plaudits for how good he was on the field,” he added.
Ayew has been in fine form as Black Stars captain, leading Ghana to back-to-back wins in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The team secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Chad before dispatching Madagascar 3-0. The forward played a pivotal role in the victories, contributing five goal involvements—scoring once and assisting four times.
With Ghana sitting atop Group I with 15 points, three ahead of second-placed Comoros, Ayew will be eager to maintain the team’s momentum.
The Black Stars will participate in a four-nation tournament in England before resuming their World Cup qualifying campaign against Chad and Mali in September.
