John Mahama is my friend but… – Kweku Baako

Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako, has explained why he has never and will never vote for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in any election in Ghana.

Speaking on Peace FM, Mr. Baako attributed his stance to what he described as a betrayal of an agreement made among influential leaders following the June 4, 1979 coup.

According to him, Jerry John Rawlings and members of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) violated that pact by overthrowing the Limann government. Since the NDC is an offshoot of the PNDC, Baako insists he cannot support the party.

While stressing his respect for individuals within the NDC, including its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, Baako maintained that his principles prevent him from voting for the party.

“John Mahama is my friend, like a brother. I admire and like him, but he won’t get my vote. He knows this and accepts it, and that’s something I admire about him. My own corpse won’t even vote for the NDC,” Baako stated.

He added, “I have close friends in the NDC whom I respect and admire for their dedication to progress, but the fact remains: this party came out of the PNDC that overthrew the Limann PNP. After the June 4 coup, we agreed that no coup would ever happen again. I can’t reconcile with that. While I accept the NDC as a democratic party today, their genesis is my issue.”

Mr. Baako also defended his endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, asserting his right to express political preferences.

“It’s my right to declare that this is not a party I can align with, even though I have great friends in the NDC. Politically and ideologically, I have the right to campaign against them. Should that invite insults and attacks on my character?” he asked.

In a related Facebook post, as reported by Pokuase Mall, Baako shared his perspective on Ghana’s political landscape, offering predictions for the upcoming elections.

“Two weeks ago, my crystal ball suggested a runoff in the presidential race, with the Elephant (NPP) securing a parliamentary majority,” he noted. “But this morning’s picture hints at a potential first-round victory for the Elephant in the presidential election. These are merely observations from my crystal ball. To clarify, I am neither a prophet nor a pollster,” he concluded.
