The Chairman of the Mines and Technology Committee in parliament, Emmanuel Kwesi Gyamfi, has accused John Jinapor Deputy of mischief for claiming that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has unilaterally increased electricity by 33%.
Mr Jinapor had cited the ECG of increasing tariffs without the approval of the Public Utility Regulation Commission (PURC) but Mr Gyamfi has dismissed the allegations, saying they are simply untrue and mischievous.

“When I enquired, I was told the IPPs [Independent Power Producers] said they charge in dollars therefore when the cedi depreciates, they wish to pass that on to consumers but I insisted that was illegal because, under Section 19 of the PURC Act, only the PURC has the mandate to announce tariffs,” he explained.

“It is not true that the cost has been passed on to the consumer and I am surprised that our elites from the Minority are being disingenuous and mischievous over this issue,” he added.
