Former Deputy Power Minister, John Jinapor, has alleged that there has been a 33% illegal increment in electricity tariffs by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to Mr Jinapor, he had received complaints from consumers, especially, prepaid users that the electricity units they buy in recent times do not last.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii sen Friday, Mr Jinapor explained that the action taken by the ECG was illegal because they do not have the mandate to increase tariffs without an approval from the Public Utility Regulation Commission (PURC).
“The ECG submitted a gazette to Parliament and when I checked the analysis, I realized that the amount has been increased by 33%, translating into GHC52.7 per kilowatt hour. This indicated an increase in the tariff and they attributed it to depreciation in the value of the cedi which has affected their charges. If what I’m saying is not true, why hasn’t the ECG come out to deny that they haven’t increased the bulk generation tariff and has brought the Gazette to parliament,” he asked.

Going further, he said a change in tariffs and rates must be approved by the PURC and be publicly published for consumers to know.
