Fishermen in Jamestown have expressed urgent concerns about their exclusion in the soon-to-be-commissioned fishing harbour.
Despite government assurances that they will be included in the harbour’s operations, the artisanal fishermen fear they might be sidelined based on current indications.
The $60 million project, now reportedly 99 per cent complete, is anticipated to significantly reshape the town’s fishing landscape.
However, these fishermen are determined to ensure that their traditional roles are preserved and protected within this new development.
In an interview, the Chief Fisherman of Jamestown, Nii Armah Wulu II, stressed the importance of clear guarantees to secure their livelihoods.
“The fisherfolk here are many, and fishing is our source of livelihood. But concerning the harbour, we’re uncertain about our future because when you visit the site, the Chinese inscriptions dominating the walls suggest that the project might not be handed over to us.”
“There must be some form of engagement because there is growing unrest among us,” he told Citi News.
