It’s time to reform UN’s ‘unjust’ Security Council – Akufo-Addo

-

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated the need for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations Security Council, stressing the importance of a fairer global governance system.

Speaking on Tuesday night at the UN Summit on the Future of the World, he highlighted the Security Council’s outdated structure, which he described as a remnant of the post-World War II era.

“In its current form, the [Security] Council does not represent the realities of today’s world. Africa, home to 1.4 billion people, is significantly underrepresented,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

“We cannot advocate for multilateralism while global governance is anchored in an unjust and unequal system. Mr. President, half-measures are no longer enough. We must pursue bold reforms that ensure every nation—large or small, rich or poor—has an equal voice at the table” he added.

On Wednesday, September 25, President Akufo-Addo is set to deliver his final address to the United Nations General Assembly, where he is expected to address climate change and other pressing global issues.
