Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has described his new role as an exciting and fulfilling chapter in his political career.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, January 28, he shared his thoughts on his appointment, which was announced last week following the swearing-in of his predecessor, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, as Finance Minister.
“It is exciting to be sitting there,” Ayariga said with a smile.
“In my career, I have been an assemblyman, a member of parliament, a Deputy Minister of State, a Minister of State, and even a presidential spokesperson. But leading the NDC caucus in the chamber is something I had never done before. So, it comes with a sense of satisfaction that, ultimately, I get to lead at a time when we have an overwhelming majority and our party is in power. I’m happy.”
Mr. Ayariga expressed deep gratitude to his colleagues for supporting his nomination and to the leadership of the NDC, including General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia and President John Mahama, both of whom he described as trusted colleagues and mentors.
“I really thank my colleagues for their confidence in me,” he said.
“And I also thank the party leadership – Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who understands the house very well from his time as a member of parliament, and President Mahama, who was my colleague in Parliament and is now my boss. Their support means a lot.”
The Majority Leader revealed that, despite his extensive political experience, he never actively sought leadership positions, including his current one.
For Ayariga, leadership is about earning the trust and confidence of one’s peers rather than chasing titles.
“To tell you the truth, it’s not a position I have ever actively gone out to seek. Every time the party is about to choose leadership, my name has always been out there, but I’ve never really pursued it,” he explained.
“I believe leadership should be conferred on you when your peers and colleagues develop enough confidence in you to lead. I don’t go out seeking positions. I just wait—if they feel I can play a certain role well, and they approach me, I proceed.”
The seasoned politician spoke with a tone of humility and pride as he reflected on his journey, emphasising his belief in service and trust.
His appointment comes at a time when the NDC enjoys a strong majority in Parliament, a fact that Mr. Ayariga sees as both an opportunity and a responsibility.
“This role is significant not just for me, but for the collective work we’re doing as a party and as representatives of the people. I’m excited to take on the challenge and work closely with my colleagues to advance our agenda,” Ayariga concluded.
