It will be life changing to qualify Sudan for 2026 World Cup – Kwesi Appiah

-

Sudan head coach, Kwesi Appiah, believes that leading his team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup would be a pivotal moment in the country’s football history.

Sudan currently tops Group B with 10 points from four games, holding a two-point lead over Senegal. They remain unbeaten in their matches against Togo, DR Congo, Mauritania, and South Sudan.

In an interview with FIFA Media, the former coach of Ghana’s Black Stars emphasized the significance of a World Cup qualification for Sudan.

“Reaching the World Cup would be a great springboard for the development of football in the country,” he said.

“Administratively, it would make things much easier. It could also change the lives of my players. Currently, there are only two professionals in the squad. If we were to qualify for a World Cup, they could perform on the biggest stage and then tell themselves that they too were capable of playing in Europe.

“That’s something that would transform their mindset. You cannot imagine how much happiness a World Cup participation would bring to all of Sudan.”

The qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup will continue next year.

Meanwhile, Appiah and his team are preparing for crucial matches against Niger and Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers this September.
