Former Ghana assistant coach, George Boateng, has reflected on his pivotal role in helping the country secure qualification for the 2022 World Cup.

Following a disappointing run at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, the Black Stars were drawn against bitter rivals Nigeria in the World Cup qualifying playoffs.

The first leg, played at Baba Yara Stadium, ended in a 0-0 draw. The return leg in Abuja’s Moshood Abiola Stadium also finished 1-1, allowing Ghana to advance to the World Cup on the away goal rule.

Boateng, who worked alongside head coach Otto Addo, second assistant coach Didi Dramani, and technical advisor Chris Hughton, shared his thoughts on the achievement: “We qualified for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar, it was unbelievable for me as a coach to be in the World Cup,” he told Tribal Football.

“I really enjoyed that experience and it made me realize why people speak so highly about tournaments like the World Cup,” he added.

At the tournament in Qatar, Ghana secured a win over South Korea but suffered defeats to Portugal and Uruguay.
