Former Youth and Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has called for a comprehensive overhaul of sports in Ghana.
His remarks come after the Black Stars’ unsuccessful bid to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to take place in Morocco next year.
This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana will not participate in the tournament, having finished last in Group F with just three points and no victories from six matches.
In an interview with Channel One TV, Afriyie Ankrah expressed disappointment over the current state of sports in the nation and stressed the need for a complete reset, including reassessing the performance and management of the Black Stars.
“It was very, very sad, particularly when Kudus was going to take the penalty and the way the crowd was jeering at him. I was so shocked,” he said.
“I’ve never seen anything like that, and I think it’s about time the whole country took a closer look at the entire Black Stars, soccer, and sports, and do a rethink. It’s time for a reset,” he added.
In the wake of Ghana’s failure to qualify, the Management Committee has been disbanded, with the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) also expected to decide Otto Addo’s future today.
