‘Is that how you demonstrate?’ – Nana Akomea rebukes Democracy Hub protesters

-

Vice Chairman of the Bawumia 2024 Campaign team, Nana Akomea, has criticized the organizers and participants of the Democracy Hub protests, which began on Friday, September 20.

The protests aimed to pressure the government into taking more decisive actions against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

However, the demonstration quickly spiraled into chaos, leading to a police intervention to restore order. The police used minimal force to manage the situation.

Several protesters were arrested for allegedly ignoring warnings and engaging in vandalism near the 37 Military Hospital.

Protesters blocked roads, obstructing traffic, while their leader, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, reportedly escalated the situation by removing and throwing away the keys from a police vehicle.

In the aftermath, a significant number of protesters were detained and are now facing prosecution.

In an interview on Accra-based Peace FM, Nana Akomea, who also serves as the Managing Director of InterCity State Transport Corporation, commended the Ghana Police Service for their restraint, despite clear provocations from some of the demonstrators.

He praised the officers for arresting what he called “unruly protesters” and stressed the importance of maintaining order during such events.

“I am glad the Police showed restraint and calm, allowing us to witness the misconduct during the protest. Is that how demonstrations should be done, by blocking a hospital?,” he remarked.
