Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi has urged Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo to select the right players for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Nyantakyi’s call comes in the wake of Ghana’s disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which marks the first time in 20 years that the four-time AFCON champions will be absent from the tournament.
Ghana ended at the bottom of their group after six matches in the recent qualifiers.
Despite this setback, Nyantakyi emphasized that hope is not lost but stressed the importance of ensuring that only committed and prepared players are chosen for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers set to resume in March 2025.
“I don’t think all is lost but we have to fix it,” Nyantakyi said during an interview with Lawson FM.
“We have World Cup qualifiers in March against Chad and Madagascar but I believe that the right players will have to be called for the games.”
He continued, “It should not be the normal call-ups but players who are ready and dedicated to play for the country and the shirt.”
Ghana, who sit 2nd in Group I with 9 points will take on Chad and Madagascar in the Matchday five and six games.
Meanwhile, the future of Otto Addo as head coach remains uncertain after a lengthy meeting with the GFA Executive Council following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.
The 47-year-old coach’s position has yet to be confirmed.
