Independent parliamentary candidate for Nkoranza in the 2024 elections, Charles Owusu, has called for a thorough investigation into the recurring market fires across the country.
Reacting to the recent fire that ravaged the Adum market in Kumasi, destroying over 5,000 shops, Owusu questioned why such incidents continue to happen almost every year without adequate solutions.
“We need to get to the root cause of these market fires. We must ask the right questions and investigate the real problem,” he said in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem.
Owusu also commented on the heated exchange between the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) officials during the fire.
He defended the fire officers, noting that GNFS PRO Alex Nartey’s remark—”Shouting doesn’t quench fire”—was not an insult but a response made in the heat of the moment.
“The fire service has apologized, so there’s no need to continue dragging the issue. Instead, we should focus on preventing future fires,” he emphasized.
He urged the authorities to shift their focus to long-term fire prevention measures, rather than getting caught up in unnecessary disputes.
