The General Secretary of the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has explained that the interest shown in the presidential slot for the 2020 election by members of the umbrella family is an indication that the party is attractive.
Mr Nketia was responding to the question on the popping up of posters with the likes of Mr Alban Bagbin announcing his presidential ambition and desire to represent the NDC in 2020.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm the chief scribe of the NDC asked if the other parties were making the news with interested members ‘fighting’ to be presidential candidates.
Good for the party
According to him, the current atmosphere surrounding the NDC had exposed the lies of certain individuals that the party had collapsed or was on the verge of collapse.
Mr Nketia quizzed whether they had heard of anyone coming out to express his interest to represent the PPP, NDP, CPP, or PNC,after the 2016 general election.
He added: ”This in my opinion shows that you cannot become the President of Ghana with these political parties. This is good for the party. It gives a strong indication that the NDC is strong and has not collapsed as speculated by some faceless individuals.”
Current administration
According to him, it may turn out that these individuals do not know anything about the posters, and may be rather people who believe in their capabilities who are campaigning for them.
He ruled out any connection of the campaign to the executive, stressing that “we have not started any competition yet…It is good that people are speculating and it also shows that Ghanaians are highly disappointed in the New Patriotic Party’s government. It is an encouragement for all of us,” he concluded.
