Injuries recorded as soldiers storm Akweteyman to restore calm

Controversial scenes unfolded in Akweteyman as some individuals were seen engaged in a confrontation following a misunderstanding during the December 7, 2024 elections.

According to a report by JoyNews, many constituents expressed dissatisfaction over the alleged presence of land guards in the constituency.

It was noted that some people sustained injuries during the scuffle.

Military personnel have been deployed to the area to restore law and order as tensions continue to rise.

The constituents are claiming that some unidentified individuals assaulted them, with some suffering injuries.

They accuse the NPP parliamentary candidate in the constituency, Ama Dokua, of bringing individuals to stir up chaos.

Peter Otokunor, former Deputy National Secretary of the NDC, has called on the police to intervene and ease tensions as the situation escalates.

One constituent shared their experience with JoyNews, stating, “They asked me who I was supporting, and when I said I was a member of the NPP, they hit me on the back and my legs, which hurt me.”

Overview of the 2024 General Elections

The 2024 general elections are ongoing across 276 constituencies, with 18.8 million people expected to vote. The election features 13 presidential candidates, with 9 representing political parties and 4 running as independents.

Of the 18.8 million voters, 459,291 represent 4% of the voter population. Male voters make up 48%, while females constitute 52%. The youth, making up 55% of the electorate, will play a crucial role in the elections.

A total of 40,976 polling centers will be used, with 328 already utilized for the Special Voting exercises held on December 2 and December 5, 2024.

According to data from CODEO, the largest Civil Society Organization (CSO) monitoring the elections, there are 801 parliamentary candidates competing for 276 seats.

Among the 13 presidential candidates, 9 represent political parties, while 4 are independent. In the parliamentary race, 111 candidates are running as independents.
