An Independent Intelligence Officer with the Doyen Institute of Intelligence and Investigations, George Hawkins Adzomah, has commended the government’s swift deployment of security personnel to Nkwanta in the Oti Region to restore calm following recent disturbances in the area.

His remarks come in response to the violent clash that started on January 15, 2025, stemming from a chieftaincy dispute.

The incident claimed the lives of at least three people, with many others sustaining injuries.

Reacting to the incident, Mr. Hawkins, who also works as a humanitarian, noted in a statement that the military team tasked with restoring calm in the area has been highly professional.

“They arrested 51 persons allegedly connected to the conflict, and 2 boxes of ammunition were retrieved and kept in Police custody. So far, so good. Commuters are going about their normal daily activities,” he said in the statement.

Mr. Hawkins further commended other officials, including health professionals, who remained committed to working at the hospital despite the conflict, for their efforts to save lives.

He noted that, according to details available to him, no human rights violations by security personnel occurred during the joint operations of the military and police.

“The suspects’ dignities were highly protected,” he emphasized.

Mr. Hawkins also called on the general public to support the community, which is reeling from the devastating impact of the conflict.

“Nkwanta needs help. Therefore, I call on all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, CSOs, and international communities, to come together and deliberate on thoroughly restoring calm in the area. There is a need to initiate dialogue to avoid the recurrence of such incidents,” he added.
