Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has revealed that the devastation of forest reserves by illegal miners is equivalent to 7,500 football pitches.
He noted that over 44 forest reserves, covering thirty hectares, have been destroyed.
During a visit to the Offin Shelter Belt at Anwiafutu in the Ashanti region to assess the damage, Kofi Buah emphasized that measures are being taken to protect the environment.
Accompanied by Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and the Regional Security Council, the Minister toured the affected area in the Atwima Mponua District.
Addressing the media, Kofi Buah stressed the gravity of the situation, comparing the destruction to 7,500 football pitches. He vowed that the fight against illegal mining, or galamsey, would not be a fleeting effort, with those responsible facing the law.

“This is a call to the police officers. This government strongly supports you to ensure that perpetrators who are destroying our lands are held accountable, without fear or favor,” he stated.
The Minister also affirmed that efforts to reclaim the damaged land have already begun and called for public support in the ongoing fight against galamsey.
