I’ll work to ensure peace in Bawku – Muntaka

Interior Minister-designate, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has pledged his dedication to restoring peace in Bawku in the Upper East region.

The conflict, rooted in a chieftaincy dispute, continues to challenge the region’s stability and development.

However, Muntaka has expressed readiness to collaborate with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, to address the causes of the protracted conflict.

“We must collaborate effectively to address these issues. With commitment and teamwork, I am confident we can bring permanent peace to Bawku,” he noted.

The Asawase MP made this pledge during his vetting on Friday, adding that he will work with the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs as well.

“I will be very interested in assisting the president to achieve the vision he promised the people of Bawku, that he will do everything humanly possible to ensure peace returns. Not only in Bawku, but in all other areas across the country facing similar challenges,” he said.

“If the line of succession is clearly documented, it will take away doubt and make it easier to address disagreements,” he explained.

He also stressed the need for a national conversation on the future of chieftaincy.

“The time has come for us to approach this issue dispassionately and call for a conference on the future of our chieftaincy. Together, we can create solutions that will bring peace to Bawku and other areas within the country facing the same challenges,” he added.

On Tuesday, January 14, President John Mahama held a closed-door meeting with the King of Mamprugu, Naa Bohaga Abdulai Mahami Sheriga II, at the overlord’s palace in Nalerigu.

President Mahama stressed the importance of peace and informed the Mamprugu King of his intention to invite him to Accra soon for further discussions on restoring law and order.

Before arriving in Nalerigu, the former President had visited Bawku, where he held similar meetings with traditional authorities.

These visits were in response to escalating incidents of violence along key roads in the region.
