The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to support Ghanaian farmers with tractors and credit to enhance productivity and lower food prices.

At a campaign rally in Wa East, Dr Bawumia underscored the critical role of farming in ensuring food security and affordability.

He emphasized that boosting agricultural productivity is essential to reducing food prices and vowed to provide farmers with the necessary resources to increase their yields.

Drawing comparisons with Brazil and China, Dr. Bawumia noted that farmers in these countries produce 10 and 12 tons of maize per acre, respectively, while Ghana’s average yield is only four tons per acre.

To bridge this gap, he promised to introduce advanced farming techniques from Brazil and China to Ghanaian farmers.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to establish “super aggregators” to purchase produce directly from farmers, ensuring fair prices and minimizing post-harvest losses.

He also highlighted the importance of using lime fertilizers to improve soil fertility, pointing out Ghana’s abundant lime deposits.

“I want to support our farmers. Farming is key to reducing food prices, and we will help farmers increase their productivity. In Brazil, maize yields can reach 10 tons per acre, and in China, 12 tons, but in Ghana, we only get four tons.

“We will apply the successful practices from Brazil and China to our farmers in the Wa East District to boost productivity.”

“We will establish super aggregators to buy produce from farmers, preventing waste and ensuring fair prices for their goods.

“We will also provide farmers with tractors and credit to aid in harvesting. Additionally, we will shift from using traditional fertilizers to lime, as lime significantly enhances soil fertility. Ghana has ample lime resources, and we will help our farmers utilize this resource effectively,” he said.
