Ignoring Ayawaso MP a wake-up call to govt-Kwakye-Ofosu

Mr Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, Former Deputy Communications Minister

A former Deputy Communications Minister, Mr Felix Kwakye-Ofosu says the Minority ignoring the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency Member of Parliament (MP), Lydia Seyram Alhassan in Parliament was a wake-up call to the government to give justice to victims of the Ayawaso West Wougon by-election violence.

According to him, the Minority’s decision to ignore her contributions was not because of her gender, but because she didn’t show any interest in the violence that took place in her constituency.

“It is very worrying for a woman not to take interest in violence and killing taking place in an election in her own constituency. We didn’t hear her speak against it or stand against it before and after the incident which is very worrying and condemnable,” he said.

Speaking as a panel on Adom TV’s Morning show, Mr Kwakye-Ofosu added that her actions showed she was in support of the violence that took place in her constituency.

“We saw these masked men protecting her in videos, so we can’t exempt her from the violence that was going on. She would have shown she was a woman of principles if she came out to condemn the Ayawaso West Wougon by-election violence.

“What is happening in Parliament is to create emphasis on the fact that she sat aloof when the violence was taking place in her constituency. Any time she speaks she reminds us of the pain we went through at her constituency,” he claimed.

The Minority in Parliament on Monday ignored and refused to comment on a statement made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP.

The norm in the House is that a Minority member makes a statement after a Majority member has put an issue before the House.

The NPP MP, after being sworn-in on February 5, 2019,  a ceremony which was boycotted by the Minority in Parliament, gave her maiden statement in commemoration of the World Health Day.

While she was still talking, the National Democratic Congress MPs reportedly exhibited disinterest and refused to make any contribution after her statement when called upon to contribute by the Speaker, Prof. Mike Ocquaye.
