The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has urged Dr. Johnson Asiamah to ignore the attacks and political witch-hunting targeted at him by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
They implored him to remain resolute in the discharge of his duties, aiming to “revitalize” the Bank of Ghana and contribute to reviving the country’s ailing economy as he assumes the position of Governor of the Central Bank.
“We, the NDC Youth Wing, stand in full support of Dr. Johnson Asiamah as Governor of the Bank of Ghana. We call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to reject the unfounded allegations and divisive politicking of the NPP at this critical juncture in our nation’s history.
“It is imperative that we focus on rebuilding key institutions rather than engaging in baseless smear campaigns that serve no constructive purpose.
“We urge Dr. Asiamah to remain resolute in his mission and to make both Ghana and the people of Volta proud by demonstrating excellence and commitment in revitalizing the BoG and, by extension, the national economy,” stated a press release signed by the Volta Regional NDC Youth Organizer, Mathias Alagbo Kabila.
He asserted that Dr. Asiamah has demonstrated his capabilities in “restoring confidence in the financial sector, and we [NDC] have no doubt that he will rise above these unwarranted attacks to serve the nation with distinction.”
He condemned attempts by the NPP and the Minority in Parliament to smear Dr. Asiamah with corruption allegations and render him unfit for the appointment, adding that such moves are “a manifestation of deep-seated envy and resentment.”
“This politically motivated witch-hunt, initiated by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and amplified by Dr. Gideon Boako through a scandalous press conference, is nothing more than a manifestation of deep-seated envy and resentment.
“It is a matter of public record that upon assuming office in 2017, the NPP accused Dr. Asiamah of violating the Bank of Ghana Act and causing financial loss, particularly in relation to liquidity support provided to UniBank and UT Bank.
“For eight years, they subjected him to relentless persecution, dragging him through the courts on trumped-up charges yet failing to substantiate their claims,” he stressed.
Mr. Kabila said a competent individual such as Dr. Asiamah is needed to lead the affairs of the Central Bank, which has experienced “gross mismanagement” leading to the “near bankruptcy of the Bank.”
He urged the NPP to commend President Mahama for appointing a “seasoned, principled, and patriotic professional like Dr. Asiamah to restore the BoG to its former prestige.”
“Rather than recognizing the urgent need for competent leadership to salvage what remains of the institution, they have chosen to engage in divisive and destructive politics,” he added.
He stressed that the Youth Wing of the governing NDC would not stand aloof while the opposition attempts to prosecute and scapegoat distinguished sons and daughters of Volta origin.
“We will not stand idly by as this campaign of hatred and targeted victimization is extended to Dr. Asiamah. Having previously witnessed similar attacks on other prominent Voltarians, we are resolute in our stance against these divisive and retrogressive tactics,” he concluded.
