Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has raised concerns regarding the proposed merger of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Bui Power Authority (BPA).
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Wednesday, he questioned the performance of both entities and the potential outcomes of the merger.
“Will the merger benefit ordinary Ghanaians?” He stressed the need for a clearer, stronger argument from the government to justify the merger, particularly in terms of its impact on bureaucracy. “If it won’t enhance efficiency or guarantee better outcomes, then what’s the essence?” he questioned.
He stressed the importance of safeguarding the interests of the VRA and BPA.
“We must ensure that their share does not go missing in the process” he said.
The government’s plan involves merging the hydroelectric dams into a single entity, the Ghana Hydro Authority, as outlined in a bill currently before Parliament.
Deputy Minority Whip Ahmed Ibrahim also raised concerns during the bill’s first reading in an emergency Parliamentary sitting today.
But Nana Amoasi VII, also disclosed the critical role of reliable power supply and water management, urging that these aspects be prioritized to protect the interests of the indigenous people.
“As a traditional ruler, it is our duty to protect the interests of the indigenes,” he noted.
