Hours after the demise of Akua Donkor, the presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), videos of interviews she had conducted while alive have surfaced online.
One such video features an interview she had with Zionfelix TV, where she detailed her health status. When the interviewer asked if she could handle the rigors of the presidency given her age and health condition, she responded in the affirmative.
She also mentioned that in the unlikely event of her passing, there was someone to act in her stead.
“I have been experiencing health challenges for the past 10 years, but I am still alive. Even if I die today, my running mate will take over from me,” she said in the interview published by Zionfelix TV on October 12, 2024.
Akua Donkor passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the age of 72.
Akua Donkor, whose political career began as an Assemblywoman for Hemang in the Ashanti Region, was widely known for tickling the humor buds of people with her speeches and commentaries.
Throughout her political journey, she distinguished herself by running for the presidency multiple times, demonstrating remarkable resilience despite financial challenges.
Although her first attempt in 2012 as an independent candidate and a subsequent run in 2016 proved unsuccessful, she met the eligibility requirements of the Electoral Commission and was featured in the 2020 election.
With just 39 days to the 2024 election, Akua Donkor had been promising policies such as free vehicles for journalists, duty-free port services for the clearance of goods, free education, and improved remuneration for farmers.
A recent highlight of her 2024 presidential campaign was when she appointed Roman Fada, the manager of highlife musician Daddy Lumba and a broadcaster at Atinka FM, as her running mate.
In the meantime, Roman Fada stated in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM that no decision has been made regarding the party’s participation in the 2024 general election following Akua Donkor’s demise.
