IES backs calls to merge PURC and Energy Commission

The Institute of Energy Security (IES) has endorsed the growing calls for a merger between the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission of Ghana.

This proposal is aimed at streamlining regulatory functions, reducing operational costs, and eliminating overlapping oversight in Ghana’s energy sector.

IES argues that consolidating the two bodies into one will not only result in cost savings but also improve the efficiency and effectiveness of energy regulation in the country.

According to IES Executive Director Nana Amoasi IV, a unified regulatory body would significantly enhance policy formulation and implementation, which is crucial given the current challenges in Ghana’s energy landscape.

Nana Amoasi IV emphasized that merging the PURC and the Energy Commission would address some of these challenges by simplifying decision-making processes and reducing bureaucratic hurdles.

“Today’s power sector operates on a regional basis. In the West African power pool, all regulators are unified under one authority. You don’t see separate entities like PURC and the Energy Commission. For better policy formulation and execution, having a single command center is a positive step,” he stated.
