I will put him ahead – Michael Essien reacts to comparison with Thomas Partey

Ghana football icon Michael Essien has surprisingly stated that, if given the choice, he would pick Thomas Partey over himself at their peak playing years.

Essien, who represented Ghana in the 2006 and 2014 World Cups in Germany and Brazil, is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest footballers.

His successful career included winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League with Chelsea.

In an interview with Sporty FM, Essien praised Partey’s exceptional talent, admitting he would choose the Arsenal midfielder over his own prime.

“Between myself and Thomas Partey in our primes, I don’t think I would pick myself. I would go for Partey. He is a fantastic midfielder, you know,” Essien stated.

“I will never put myself ahead of Thomas Partey. It is two different generations, so I will put Partey ahead. He is that guy I love and I speak to him now and then,” he added.

Partey, who began his career at Atlético Madrid in 2015, quickly became one of the best defensive midfielders of his generation, winning La Liga, the UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup. His impressive form earned him a €50 million move to Arsenal in 2020.

Since then, the 31-year-old has been a key player for the Gunners, making over 100 Premier League appearances and securing the FA Community Shield.
