I will encourage private sector participation in sports development – Alan Kyerematen

Leader of the Movement for Change and Presidential aspirant of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change, Alan Kyerematen, has proposed the privatization of Ghana’s sports sector to enhance its attractiveness and profitability.

He believes that for Ghana to develop a lucrative sports industry, the government must invite private investors to take over and invest significantly in the sector.

On June 24, 2024, Mr. Kyerematen unveiled his manifesto, titled “The Great Transformation Plan” (GTP), which details various policies he plans to implement if elected as president on December 7, 2024.

During an appearance on “The Big Agenda,” a political talk show on AdomTV that airs at 5:30 PM on weekdays, Mr. Kyerematen elaborated on his Great Transformation Plan.

The host, Nana Osei Ampofo Adjei, noted that while Mr. Kyerematen had discussed numerous sectors, he had not addressed sports.

In response, Mr. Kyerematen emphasized that sports, if given proper attention, could generate substantial revenue and create jobs for the youth.

He criticized the current approach to sports development as ineffective due to financial constraints.

“For me, no government has enough money to invest in sports. It should be given to private individuals who are willing to invest in sports,” he stated. He further explained that private investment in sports would be more successful than government investment, which is currently hampered by financial limitations.

“The mistake we are making in sports is that the government thinks it should invest in everything. Meanwhile, you don’t have the money. Give it to the businessmen to do it while the government provides small incentives,” he added.
