Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has shared her surprise and gratitude over her appointment as the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, she recounted that she did not expect to hold such a position when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) came to power in 2016.
“When we came to power, everyone was expecting to be given a position, but I didn’t even expect that I would one day become the Deputy Majority Leader,” she said.
Adwoa Safo added that, historically, women in Parliament have mostly been assigned to the position of Second Deputy Whip, so her appointment was particularly surprising.
Having been in Parliament for three terms, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in such an important role.
“I thank God for the opportunity I had to serve as Deputy Majority Leader. It was a role that involved a lot of responsibility, including chairing caucuses and handling important business in Parliament,” she explained.
Adwoa Safo also noted that she took particular pride in her work with the Women’s Caucus, a platform that aims to support and empower women in politics.
“I’m glad that I was able to break the glass ceiling. I hope that my time in that role will inspire those who come after me to contribute meaningfully to Parliament,” she stated.
She also expressed her happiness that the trend of female leadership in Parliament is continuing, as evidenced by the appointment of Patricia Appiagyei as the Deputy Majority Leader.
“It’s heartwarming to see women being recognized and trusted with leadership positions in Parliament. I thank God that I had the opportunity, and I’m pleased to see that others like Patricia are now following in my footsteps,” she said.
Adwoa Safo believes that women will continue to play a greater role in the future of Ghana’s Parliament.
“I am hopeful that more women will be given prominent roles, and that the Majority side of Parliament will continue to support and promote women in leadership,” she stated.
