I have never seen anything like this – GFA official apologizes after Black Stars’ AFCON qualifier failure

-

The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has apologized to Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite their illustrious history as four-time AFCON champions, Ghana endured a disappointing qualification campaign, failing to win any of their six matches.

The team finished last in Group F with just three points after three losses and three draws. This marks the first time in 20 years that the Black Stars will miss the continental tournament, the last absence being in 2004.

Frustration among fans reached a boiling point after a 2-1 defeat to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium during the final round of qualifiers.

“I would like to apologize to Ghanaians for the massive disappointment of not qualifying for the AFCON,” Asante Twum told Asempa FM.

“I have followed the Black Stars for two decades, and I have not seen anything like this before. We went into qualifiers, played six games, and didn’t win a single one. I have never seen that before,” he added.

With no top-two finish in their group, Ghana’s focus now shifts to preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which are set to begin next year.
