Lawyer for embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahene, has alleged that he has been denied access to his client.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, former Abuakwa South MP Samuel Atta Akyea disclosed that Mr. Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, have been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for six days, in violation of the 48-hour detention rule.
However, he said EOCO officials refused him access to his clients unless they were present to record the conversation, a condition he rejected.
“They want to sit in the meeting and write. Why? What then is my use as a lawyer? This means we are collapsing the rule of law. The constitution is clear that every accused person has the right to a lawyer of his choice, so why don’t we want to abide? What is happening to Ghana? I cannot understand,” he fumed.
Mr. Boahene was arrested on Thursday, March 20, 2025, upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport from the United Kingdom on a British Airways flight.
His arrest was carried out in a joint operation by EOCO investigators, led by Deputy Director Raymond Archer, and officials from the Attorney General’s Department.
At a press conference on Monday, Attorney General and Minister for Justice Dr. Dominic Ayine stated that Mr. Boahene was arrested for allegedly diverting $7 million of public funds into his private account.
According to Dr. Ayine, the funds were meant for the procurement of cybersecurity infrastructure, but over $2 million was allegedly laundered through real estate investments.
