I don’t support creation of 25 new constituencies – NPP MP

Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Sekondi MP

The Member of
Parliament for the Sekondi Constituency on the ticket of the New Patriotic
Party (NPP), Mr Andrew Egyapa Mercer has bemoaned the double standards of
politicians in Ghana when it comes to policies.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam show Tuesday, Hon Mercer said
concerns could be raised with regards to the creation of new constituencies but
respect must be given to the body mandated to do that.

“I personally oppose
the increase in constituencies because the 275 is even too much but the
decision lies with the EC. Both NPP and National Democratic Congress (NDC) are
guilty of double standards because we all preach the adherence of the rule of
law but we don’t believe in the practice,” he stated.

To Hon Mercer, there
is no need for the opposition to complain if the EC wants to exercise its
mandate backed by the laws of Ghana.

“Against public outcry in 2012, the EC went ahead to create new constituencies and when we complained you (NDC) told us, it is the power of the EC and nothing has changed now so why are they complaining?” he asked.

The concern of Hon
Mercer follows claims by the NDC Minority in Parliament that out of the 25 new
constituencies, about 17 constituencies would be created in the Ashanti region
alone.

The EC has, however, denied that it is creating 25 new constituencies for the 2020 elections.
