Sam Payne, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the confusion about the upcoming referendum started when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) decided to make a U-turn.
To him, he doesn’t see the logic in the U-turn of a political party that seeks the views of the local people for manifesto.
“Same political party that said they are going down to take the views of Ghanaians for their manifesto is refusing to come down with the incumbent government and same local people to say ‘Yes’ to the referendum. Do you see any logic in this?” he quizzed in an interview on Peace FM, monitored by Adomonline.com.
He explained that the apex of the country’s democracy is the Executive and Article 553 of the constitution has given power to the political parties in Ghana to get involved in the politics of the country, hence there is no problem introducing politics into the local governance system.
“Now the NDC is creating an impression that the incumbent government is trying to politicise elections at the local assembly but the fact is we want to introduce politics into the local level to improve and groom better politicians,” he said.
