I am all for it if… – Gideon Boako on reintroduction of road tolls [Listen]

Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr. Gideon Boako, has declared support for the government’s decision to reintroduce road tolls, emphasizing the importance of efficiency in the collection process.

“If the government is bringing back road tolls, I am 100 per cent for it. I support it fully,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show.

Dr. Boako stressed that the toll system should not be manual as before but rather digitized and automated to enhance efficiency.

“If we get efficiency from the road tolls and use the money to repair our roads, then I am all for it,” he noted.

He dismissed suggestions that he would oppose the initiative simply because it is being reintroduced under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

“I won’t sit here and say it’s not good just because it’s the NDC’s idea. That wouldn’t be fair,” he stated.

On the issue of tax policies, Dr. Boako acknowledged the NDC government’s promise to remove some taxes but cautioned against introducing new ones that may not benefit Ghanaians.

“For instance, if they remove betting taxes, which people are looking forward to, they shouldn’t turn around and introduce other taxes that will burden Ghanaians. If that happens, then they have not helped anybody and have not been fair to the people who voted them into power,” he argued.

His comments come after the Ministry of Roads and Highways announced the reintroduction of road and bridge tolls as part of efforts to generate revenue for road maintenance and related projects.

In a statement dated Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Ministry assured the public that the toll collection system would be modernized and technology-driven to ensure efficiency and convenience.
