The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has expressed serious concerns about the deteriorating state of the Densu River, citing the growing threat of pollution from human activities beyond illegal mining.
These activities are putting the Weija Dam, which provides water to Accra and Kasoa, at risk.
Ing. Emmanuel Johnson, the Regional Chief Manager of Accra West GWCL, highlighted that while illegal mining (galamsey) is a well-known threat to the country’s water bodies, other harmful practices like poor agricultural methods and sand winning are also contributing to the pollution of freshwater sources.
Speaking during a tour of the Weija Water Treatment Plant in Accra ahead of World Water Day on March 22, 2025, Ing. Johnson emphasized the need for responsible water usage to ensure adequate access to clean water in the future.
He cautioned, “The population is growing, and with it, water usage for industrial, commercial, and domestic activities. If we fail to ensure sustainable water practices, we may face challenges in securing sufficient water, forcing people to travel longer distances for fresh water.”
Additionally, the company is currently losing 51% of the water it produces nationwide due to leakages, burst pipes, and illegal usage. It is also only able to collect revenue for 41% of the water supplied.
