New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has warned the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stop claiming that President Akufo-Addo is behind the petition calling for the removal of the chair of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, Mrs. Charlotte Osei.
According to him, Mrs. Charlotte Osei is not above the law and therefore should be investigated if allegations of corruption have been leveled against her.
“Who is Charlotte Osei. She is nobody and seriously I don’t feel sorry for her at all. She is not above the law and so I see the investigation as a step in the right direction but I want to send a warning to the NDC to desist from dragging Akufo Addo into it.
“As a President, he is not responsible for impeaching public officials until he uses right means and I believe that is what he is doing, so the NDC should stop blaming him,” he warned.
Ken Agyapong was speaking on Adom TV’s Morning Show “Badwam” Tuesday concerning Mrs. Charlotte Osei’s request to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to furnish her with a copy of the petition seeking her removal from office.
Some unnamed staff of the Commission in July 2017 petitioned Nana Akufo-Addo to remove Mrs. Osei over alleged abuse of office, causing financial loss to the state and breaches of Ghana’s procurement laws.
The petition was then forwarded to the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, to establish a prima facie case based on which impeachment proceedings would commence against the EC chair.
Mrs. Osei who has since December 6, 2017 been invited to by the CJ to appear before a Committee for the impeachment hearing.
But ahead of the hearing before the CJ-established Committee, Mrs. Osei on Monday, December 11, 2017 wrote to President Akufo-Addo and the CJ to make available to her, a copy of the petition, which is the basis of the impending proceedings against her.
In her letter to the President, Mrs. Osei suggested the petition, which was presented to the President by legal practitioner Maxwell Opoku-Agyemang, was brought to her attention through media reports.
“Respectfully your Excellency, I would appreciate being furnished with a copy of the said petition to enable me obtain the requisite advice I may need on the matter,” she requested in the letter.
But the outspoken MP who believes the EC Chair is only seeking for sympathy, maintained that steps taken by the Chief Justice to probe the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei and two of her deputies, Amadu Sulley (in charge of Operations), and Georgina Amankwa (in charge of Corporate Services), is not politically motivated.
According to him, given the importance of the institution these personalities are working for, it was necessary to look into allegations of corruption and abuse of office leveled against the officials.
