President Akuffo Addo has directed the governing council of the University of Education Winneba to amicably resolve all grievances for which a private citizen has dragged the school to court.
It will be recalled that an assembly member Supi Kofi sued the school seeking declarations that some decisions of the previous governing council were illegal.
The impasse led to the temporal closure of the school and a strike by some lectures.
But speaking at a congregation ceremony of the UEW, President Akufo Addo urged the newly constituted council to do all within its power to see to an amicable settlement of all matters currently pending before the ruling of the court.
“I am aware of recent happenings at UEW. Disturbing, as it were, it is noteworthy that it appears finality is being brought to beware on the matter. The current challenges in my view can be best surmounted if all stakeholders act within the confines of the law and respect the rule of law.”
“Court decisions are not always pleasant but they are in principle, the surest way to resolve disputes. Let us not through our utterance, actions and inactions undermine the authority of our courts. I am by this urging the newly constituted governing council to do all within its power to see to an amicable settlement of all matters pending before the High Court.”
“In the same vein, Chairperson of the governing council must urgently ensure that the council puts into place measures to seal all loopholes of waste and abuse of public funds,” the President said.
He also encouraged all lectures to resume full academic duties and use the university’s process to resolve any outstanding grievances.
“I encourage all lectures to resume full academic duties and use the right process to resolve their issues” he added.
Meanwhile, Minister of State in charge of Tertiary education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah is urging the newly constituted governing council of the University of Education, Winneba to push for an out of court settlement in the current legal tussle the University is embroiled with.
